My GSIMC experience – CT Nguyen

During this last year, GSIMC has organized a number of events to help students engage in networking and career development opportunities. If we had not had the best Treasurer like CT, nothing would have been successfully done.

Today CT, our very best Treasurer, shares his GSIMC experience.

Hi all,

My name is CT and I am currently the Treasurer of GSIMC. Originally from Vietnam, I obtained my BA in Media Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from Roger Williams University in the small town of Bristol, Rhode Island.

Before accepting this position, I had no idea how much fun I was going to have or how many new friends I was going to make. I was always thought that the Treasurer would only deal with the financial situation of the organization. Which it does, but this position also does a lot more than that. After this experience, I can truly say that this position has helped my transition to Emerson College easier. I have learned and grown personally and professionally through networking and through the events that were held by GSIMC. It was also fun being in a position where I can spread the IMC love to the rest of the Emerson community.

I am excited to see what the new officers will bring to the table and I believe that their plans will only strengthen and improve the reputation of GSIMC.

*** Please send email to GSIMC (emerson.gsimc@gmail.com) by November 16 (Friday) at midnight if you are ready to fulfill your experience at Emerson College with GSIMC. We are opening four positions, President, Vice President, Event Planner, and Treasurer. Please attach your brief bio (5 to 7 sentences) to explain yourself and why you’re qualified to GSIMC. Applying multiple positions is acceptable.

My GSIMC experience – Haley Nagle

We all know that current GSIMC officers, Haley, Jamie, Shilpa, and CT, have done a tremendous job since last fall. Not only did they contribute their time and efforts, all events, held by GSIMC, encouraged IMC students to bond together and impart the knowledge. After a year of committment, they are about to deliver torches to the next GSIMC officers.

What does GSIMC mean to current four officers? What did they learn from GSIMC? What are suggestions to the next candidates?

Our dearest President Haley shares her valuable GSIMC experience.

Hi everyone!

My name is Haley and I am the current President of GSIMC. I am a second year IMC student, originally from San Francisco, California. I received my undergraduate degree from Cal Poly State University in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations.

Getting involved in GSIMC, made my transition into Emerson and the Boston area so much easier and WAY more fun. It has been a great way to meet new people, network and get to know the college and faculty better. I can truly say that all of us on the Executive Board have become great friends who support one another and all share the same goal in making our Emerson College experience the best it can possibly be. I will always cherish the time we spent together and how we helped make a difference within the IMC community.

I cannot wait to see what the 2013 GSIMC Executive Board has in store for us! I am certain that they will do great things. Remember to believe in yourself, take risks and most importantly, have fun!

Interviewing Techniques Workshop

You walk into an interview and are asked the questions that no one likes to answer, such as, what are your weaknesses and strengths? How would our company benefit by hiring you? Or how would someone describe you?

What do you do? How do you go about answering them?

Join GSIMC for the last chapter of their Professional Speaking Workshop Series on Friday, April 13th, 2012 at Multipurpose Room, Piano Row Building. Find out how to best answer those tough questions while remaining professional but still being true to yourself. Do not miss out on this GREAT opportunity led by Professor Cathryn Edelstein!

For more information, please visit our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/events/382407901779886/). Also, feel free send an email at emerson.gsimc@gmail.com if you have any questions.

What did GSIMC do for their second chapter of the Public Speaking Workshop Series?

Last Friday, we proudly invited current IMC graduate students and faculty to our second workshop of the Professional Speaking Series. Unlike the previous one, the main topic was “pitch speeches” otherwise known as “elevator talk”. Suppose you have only 90 seconds to explain your creative idea to your boss.. can you do it? Will your boss clearly understand what you are trying to say? Are you engaging and emphasize your call to action?

Through Cathryn’s great advice and the ability to practice impromptu pitch speeches, we can firmly say our workshop was VERY successful! 🙂

Here are some pictures that show how vibrant the workshop was!

Light snacks and beverages. Yes, they were ALL for the participants!

Did you know that the GSIMC has an awesome executive member who has a potential to be a graphic designer??

Professor Catheryn Edelstein delivered the lecture and explained how to improve our pitch speech skills. What is your strategy to improve your communication skills?

After the lecture, each participant had an opportunity to deliver a pitch speech to sell a product, service, or themselves. By following the 5 steps (Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization and Action), each person did extremely well and presented with their own unique style. After each speech, the group was able to give feedback and suggestions to the participant. It was a great way to interact with one another and further improve our skills.

How was Professor Youn’s Speech? Were you interested in purchasing her new golf club cleaner?

GSIMC was pleased to host this second chapter of the series. We hope all participants had a great time and strengthened their communication skills. Remember, pitch speeches are not just for work. You can apply them to your daily life but always remember, make your pitch speech SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE, and PERSUASIVE!

Next month, GSIMC will organize the third chapter of the Professional Speaking Workshop Series: How to Master Job Interviews. Mark your calendars for April 13th (Friday)!! (More details to come)

Thanks again everyone!!!
